Introducing My Blog

My name is Tony. I'm a math teacher in San Clemente, Ca and I've been teaching since 2000. I'm a tech nerd and douse myself in everything related to computer technology. From coding to photography, if it has to do with bits, I'm interested.

My teaching practice is no different. From the beginning, I've incorporated technology in some form, and enjoy expanding my repertoire each year. Early on, I programmed Examview math problems algorithmically. Later, I published those problems on a blogger blog for my students to engage in. Back then, the only options were to have the results emailed to me. This was the beginning of me using data to guide instruction. Today, that process has evolved as education technology continues to improve and push new boundaries with not only what is possible but to also redefine education and what we should ask of our students.

This blog is about my journey through education technology and how it can help others transform their classroom to not only become more efficient but a better experience for everyone. I'll post something for everyone, from teachers taking those first steps to experts in the field. I hope to inspire others to take action to improve their classroom and engage students in learning at higher levels.

My next topics will uncover flipped instruction since many school districts will employ this technique. Be sure to subscribe to receive the latest posts, including news on my upcoming podcast and YouTube channel.

Got Training?

After reading posts from many forums, I realize there are lots of teachers looking to get Google certified. Some are doing it as part of a growing trend, others are being forced by their district. While some teachers are comfortable with using these tools and taking the tests, most are not and are feeling the pressure of these new requirements. I'm here to help. As part of my Google Certified Trainer, I need to provide training for teachers and collect feedback on the sessions. Below is a calendar of my training. At this point, all training is free and online. I will conduct the training using Google Meet. This will allow me to share my screen as I use the Google tools, and allow attendees to share their screen so I can guide them through tasks while the rest of the group follows along. If you'd like to participate in my upcoming training, please register using this form. I will be sure to email you all details as they develop. Loading…

Flipped Instruction Part 1 - Foundations

Add caption Flipped instruction is a method of teaching where the student's homework is to consume and process content that is usually accessed in the classroom, and completing assignments that are usually considered "homework" in the classroom. The idea stems from the frustration many students have - students spend class time writing down notes, then go home to work on the assignment that the notes support, only to find they have several questions and now need the teacher for support. But of course, the teacher isn't available and is eager to start another set of lecture notes for the next class. The flipped model changes the location of each activity and places the teacher and student together for maximum support and feedback for both parties. The student now has access to the teacher to answer those questions that can't be answered outside of class hours, and the teacher gets feedback on the effectiveness of their lecture. The beginning of my Google Form Today...

I Passed My Tests!

Today I passed my latest Google Educator test, the "Trainer Skills Assessment". I have now passed all the Google Educator exams and am working toward earning my "Google Certified Trainer" badge. In order to do this, I need to complete 5 trainings and submit a 3-minute video of a training. Since school is out, and I'm not about to wait for a school to ask me to train their staff, I'm going to start with Live YouTube trainings next week focusing on Google tools to enhance your teaching practice. What would you like to learn more about? I'd be happy to create a training around your interest and how technology can assist you in your professional goals. I figure Google Classroom is a good place to start, so Monday morning I'll start my first virtual training on Getting started with Google Classroom as I'm sure everyone will need a refresher when the next school year gets started. We'll dive into organizing your classes, settings to keep in mind, a...
